Back massage

I’ve heard it from many new clients. They feel that getting a massage is a frivolous indulgence and a guilty pleasure. They come in once, feel great, and then cut massage from their budget because they consider it a luxury expense. I, even as a massage therapist, have had these thoughts flash through my head. But I let those thoughts keep on moving through because I know both from the science perspective, and from personal experience how vital body work like massage is to both my mental and physical well-being.

On the most obvious level, there is a manipulation of tissues during your massage. This manipulation stretches connective tissue and muscle. When tissues are flexible they are less prone to injury. The act of passively (letting your massage therapist do all the work!) stretching muscles while you relax allows for a deeper stretch , targeting specific knots, trigger points and trouble issues more effectively than general active stretching. Massage also helps increase range of motion in joints, decrease inflammation in the body, and relieve muscle fatigue, tension and pain.

But beyond the obvious, other health benefits include:

*Increased oxygenation to blood and in turn increased oxygenated blood to vital organs

*Aids the lymph system in moving toxins out of cells and tissues. This in turn increases the body’s secretions and excretions. It increases the production of gastric juices, saliva, and urine, and increased excretion of nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus, and salt. As a result, cells work more efficiently and the metabolic rate increase.

*By using different techniques, depending on the needs of the client, massage can soothe or stimulate the nervous system and aid in the overall sense of well-being.

*Boosted immune system function by supporting gut health by supplying more blood to the gut, and making the gut eliminate waists more efficiently. The immune system is housed in your gut, making gut health a massive priority for overall health.

Massage has so much to offer beyond the luxurious relaxation that is typically associated with it. There is no more enjoyable way of taking care of your mental and physical well-being than including a good and knowledgeable massage therapist in your arsenal of heath care providers.
