Colic is a condition in newborns of excessive and repeated bouts of crying. While colic is common, it is very stressful on the parents, family and infant. The cause of colic is unknown and is used when other conditions; such as reflux, allergies and others, have been ruled out as the cause for the upset or pain in the infant. While the cause is not known, irritation to the nervous system can be a contributing factor. Most often, colic means simply that the child is unusually sensitive to stimulation or cannot “self-console” or regulate his or her nervous system. This is often called an immature nervous system. This show of sensitivity also demonstrates the irritation to the nervous system.
The theory that an irritated spine may contribute to colic is supported by the frequent improvement in symptoms by using gentle chiropractic adjustments. The birthing process can be very stressful for a newborn, especially on their neck and head and can lead to spinal misalignments as well as cranial vault irritation. Chiropractic care can help to remove and correct the misalignments and remove irritation to the nervous system. Nutrition is another aspect of chiropractic care that can contribute to colic. This could be either the mother or the infant’s diet. If breastfeeding, the mother’s diet will directly play a role on the diet of the infant. If she is eating foods that irritate the infant’s stomach they will be constantly upset. On the other spectrum a baby who is formula fed can also get irritations to the stomach because of the different proteins in the milk. There can also be a problem if the child is getting cow’s milk at too young of an age. These can often be overlooked because the baby doesn’t show signs of pain or gastrointestinal problems.
How We Can Help
We use state-of-the-art scanning technology to measure nervous system function and progress throughout a patients care. This scanning technology allows use to see what root causes are contributing to the patients symptoms. The scans are done during the first visit for every patient as well as at the end of treatment plans to compare and demonstrate changes that were made during their care. In addition, the initial consultation includes a detailed history and chiropractic examination. The history includes any past illnesses or problems experienced, the details of the current complaint, and social and family health. During the chiropractic examination a series of tests are performed for specific areas of the body; including the spine and any extremities deemed necessary by one of our chiropractors.
Our chiropractors use specialized techniques with an emphasis on SOT (Sacro Occipital Technique). Other techniques include Diversified, Gonstead and CMRT (Chiropractic Manipulative Reflex Technique). Our doctors also have a background in soft tissue techniques (massage therapy) and training in fascial movement taping. Our client demographic is very diverse including families, pregnant women, infants/toddlers and athletes of all ages. Our athletes vary from young athletes, weekend warriors, college athletes and professional competing athletes.
